The Arizona Reality

Built for Coyotes, Hawks and 115-Degree Summers

Arizona is one of the hardest dog-run environments in the country, and we mean that as a compliment to the wildlife. Valley coyotes take small dogs out of fenced yards in daylight; they scale six-foot block walls and tunnel under fence lines overnight. Hawks and great horned owls work the same neighborhoods from above. And from June through September, the sun is its own predator.

So an Arizona dog run gets the full spec, every time: 14-gauge galvanized steel mesh on framed lumber, a buried dig guard or anchored ground skirt, 100 percent roof coverage, and self-latching two-point hardware. Then the desert layer: solid roofing positioned against the afternoon sun path, cross-ventilation, cool-surface ground options (shaded pavers, turf rated for heat, never bare gravel), and misting lines roughed in if you want them.

Monsoon season is designed for too — anchoring, flashing and drainage that hold up when the August storms roll through. It's the same engineering discipline that goes into our Arizona catios, applied to a bigger, happier athlete.

The Non-Negotiables

Every Arizona Dog Run Comes With the Full Spec

  • 14-gauge galvanized steel mesh — screwed to framed lumber, never stapled chicken wire
  • Dig guard — buried mesh or an anchored ground skirt at the full perimeter
  • 100% roof coverage — mesh, polycarbonate or solid roofing matched to your home
  • Self-latching two-point hardware — on every door, human and dog
  • Climate engineering — designed for Sonoran heat and monsoon wind, not a catalog's climate

One company, one spec: the same published system protects dogs from Phoenix, Arizona to Baltimore, Maryland and everywhere we build — from the dog run builder that started on the hardest enclosure problem there is. The full specification — including the coyote-proofing deep-dive and the pricing band — lives on our main custom dog runs page.

Picture this in your own backyard.

Licensed Arizona Contractor, Start to Finish

Monument Catios is an Arizona licensed contractor — ROC #364641 — which means your dog run is designed, permitted where required, and built under one contract by our own crew, with the Registrar of Contractors standing behind the license. We're also licensed in Maryland (MHIC #167535-02) and registered in Pennsylvania (HIC #PA214722). HOA design review is a way of life in the Valley; we handle the paperwork and match the run to your home's finishes so approval is the easy part.

Service Area

Where We Build Dog Runs in Arizona

Our Arizona crews build across the Valley and beyond: Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, Queen Creek, Tucson, Prescott and Flagstaff. If you're elsewhere in Arizona, ask — the crew travels.

Wherever you are in Arizona, the offer is the same: a licensed dog run builder — not a kennel installer bolting prefab panels together — designing a custom run around your yard, your dog, and your rules. Call it a dog run or an outdoor dog kennel; the spec doesn't change.

Designed for Arizona Yards

Built for the Way Arizona Yards Actually Are

Arizona yards have their own grammar: block-wall perimeters, gravel and desert landscaping, covered patios, and pool fencing that already divides the space. We design dog runs that work with all of it — runs tucked along a block wall that use it as one finished side, patio-corner conversions that borrow existing roof, and freestanding runs placed where the house's afternoon shadow does half the shade work.

Ground treatments matter more here than anywhere: heat-rated turf, shaded pavers, or raked gravel over a dig guard, chosen for paws in June rather than photos in March.

The block-wall run

One existing wall, three built sides, full roof — the most cost-efficient Arizona layout, and the shadiest.

The patio conversion

An under-used covered patio becomes a fully meshed, gated dog room connected to the house by its own door.

The freestanding shade run

A stand-alone structure with solid roofing positioned against the sun path — for yards with room to choose the best spot.

What Monument Clients Say

Real five-star reviews from our Google Business Profile — including the covered dog pen we designed and built to keep little Yorkies safe in coyote country. Same crews, same predator-proof engineering.

"We've actually had a coyote jump over our block wall into the backyard, and we've even had an owl sitting on our patio cover — so we knew we needed something more secure than a typical dog run. They designed a safe, secure, covered dog pen… built on-site by skilled carpenters using high-quality materials. It gives us peace of mind knowing our little Yorkies are protected."

Arizona Dog Run Questions

Questions about pricing, coyotes or Phoenix heat? Start here, then tell us about your dog and your yard.

How much does a dog run cost in Arizona?

The same published band as everywhere we build: most custom dog runs land between $3,500 and $10,000+, with Arizona projects often adding shade roofing and misting that push toward the middle of the band. Every project gets a fixed written price from a licensed contractor (ROC #364641) before we build.

What makes a dog run coyote-proof in Arizona?

Four specs working together: 14-gauge galvanized steel mesh a coyote can't bite through, a buried dig guard or anchored ground skirt so it can't tunnel under, full roof coverage because Valley coyotes clear six-foot walls, and self-latching two-point door hardware. An open-top run in Arizona is not coyote-proof, whatever the fence height.

Can my dog use an outdoor run in Phoenix summer?

With the right design, yes — mornings, evenings and shaded midday time. We position solid roofing against the sun path, spec cool ground surfaces so paws stay off scorched gravel, design for cross-breeze, and rough in misting lines. What we won't do is pretend a bare, unshaded run is usable in July.

Do I need a permit or HOA approval for a dog run in Arizona?

Often an HOA review, sometimes a permit, depending on your city and the structure's size and attachment. As the licensed contractor of record we handle both — and because the run is designed to match your home, HOA approval is usually straightforward.
