Custom Duck Coops, Built On-Site

Ducks are not chickens — housing built for chickens quietly fails them. We design duck-first coops and enclosures, site-built in Arizona, Maryland, Pennsylvania & North Carolina.

The Substance

Ducks Are Not Chickens

Most "duck coops" for sale are chicken coops with a new product photo. The differences below aren't preferences — they're the design requirements, and skipping any of them shows up as wet bedding, injured legs, or worse.

Ground-level everything

Ducks don't roost — they sleep and nest on the ground. Elevated houses, steep ramps and roosting bars are wasted space and leg-injury risks. We build low, wide and stable.

Water is the design problem

Ducks need water deep enough to dunk their heads and they splash everything within reach. Housing that ignores this becomes a swamp. Ours drains it by design.

Drainage or despair

Sloped, well-draining bases — gravel beds, smart grading, splash zones placed away from bedding — are the difference between a clean run and permanent mud.

Wider doors, gentler paths

Ducks waddle two abreast and panic in narrow openings. Doorways, ramps (nearly flat, if any) and path widths are all sized for duck traffic, not chicken hops.

Ventilation without drafts

Ducks breathe a lot of moisture into a small house overnight. We vent high to move damp air out while keeping floor-level sleeping areas draft-free — the detail chicken coops get backwards for ducks.

Night-lock routine, built in

Because ducks sleep exposed on the ground, the nightly lock-up matters more than for any other backyard bird. We design the house and door hardware so locking up takes ten seconds — so it actually happens.

The Hard Truth

Predator-Proofing for Ducks

Ducks are among the most predator-exposed animals in a backyard: they sleep on the ground, they're slow, and most domestic breeds can't fly to safety. Everything hunts them — raccoons and foxes at night, coyotes where the range allows, hawks and owls from above, rats and snakes after the eggs.

Our answer is the same system we've refined on catios and coops, tuned for ground-level birds: heavy-gauge galvanized predator-proof mesh (never chicken wire), a dig barrier buried at the base or skirted outward and anchored, a fully covered run, and a night house with self-latching, two-point hardware that raccoons can't work open.

Around Phoenix, coyotes and night heat shape the design; from Baltimore and the Chesapeake out through Pennsylvania and North Carolina, fox pressure and winter mud lead the list. Same spec, different emphasis — and we build to your yard's actual threat profile.

The Fun Part

Pond and Pool Integration

Ducks don't strictly need a pond — but water they can bathe in transforms the flock, and it's where ducks are the most fun to watch. The trick is doing it without creating a mosquito farm or a mud pit.

We design splash-pool zones with drainage underneath and quick-dump plumbing, or build the enclosure around an existing pond or water feature with the mesh, footings and shade placed to protect both the ducks and the water. If you're dreaming of a small filtered duck pond, we'll design the enclosure so the pond can come later without rebuilding anything.

Spec'd for Ducks and Keepers

What's In a Monument Duck Setup

The duck house sits low and wide: ground-level entry with at most a gentle ramp, straw-friendly nesting corners (ducks nest where they please — we give them good options), and high venting that pulls out the remarkable amount of moisture a sleeping flock breathes without drafting the floor where they sleep.

The duck run is engineered around water: the splash zone sits on a drained gravel bed away from bedding, food stations stay dry and rodent-smart, and paths are sized for waddling traffic. Everything opens for humans — walk-in height where the footprint allows, wide clean-out access everywhere, and a night-lock door you’ll actually use, because the routine you'll actually do every night is part of the design. It’s waterfowl-first engineering — built around water instead of fighting it.

Build or Buy?

A Duck Coop Builder, Not a Shipped Shed

Before you buy a "duck coop" online, run it through this checklist — it's the honest version of what to know before you build or buy, and it's the standard we hold our own work to as a duck coop builder.

  • Is it actually designed for ducks? Ground-level nesting, no roosts, near-flat entry — or is it a chicken coop with new marketing?
  • What's the mesh? If the listing says "wire" without a gauge, assume chicken wire — and assume a raccoon opens it like a bag of chips.
  • Where does the water go? No drainage plan means mud in a month. Site-built bases are graded and drained; shipped floors just sit there.
  • Is the run covered — completely? A partly covered run is an unlocked door with a view of the sky.
  • Who stands behind it? A licensed builder with a contract and a phone number — or a marketplace return window. AZ ROC #364641 · MD MHIC #167535-02 · PA HIC #PA214722.

If a kit passes that checklist and fits your flock, buy it with our blessing. When you want duck housing designed for your yard, your water plan and your predators — that's what we build.

Sizing & Money

Duck Coop Sizes and What They Cost

Size to the flock: plan at least 4 to 6 square feet of house and 10 to 15 square feet of run per duck — more than a chicken needs, because everything happens at ground level and water multiplies the mess. Three to five ducks is the sweet spot for most backyards; we design so the run can grow if the flock does.

On price, we quote every duck coop and duck pen from its design — flock size, run footage, water features, drainage work and site conditions all move the number honestly. What you can count on: a fixed, itemized written quote after a free design consultation, predator-proofing as standard rather than an upgrade, and deposits that follow your state's home improvement laws.

"We've actually had a coyote jump over our block wall into the backyard, and we've even had an owl sitting on our patio cover — so we knew we needed something more secure than a typical dog run. They designed a safe, secure, covered dog pen… built on-site by skilled carpenters using high-quality materials. It gives us peace of mind knowing our little Yorkies are protected."

Duck Coop Questions, Answered

How much does a custom duck coop cost?

Every Monument duck coop is quoted from its design — flock size, run footage, water features, drainage work and predator-proofing depth all move the number, so a flat price sheet would be a guess. You get a fixed, itemized written price after a free design consultation, before any work starts and with no obligation.

Can ducks live in a chicken coop?

Not well. Ducks don't roost — they sleep on the ground, so elevated coops with ramps and roosting bars are wasted on them and often unsafe. Ducks need ground-level nesting, far more water (and the mud that comes with it), wider doorways for their gait, and ventilation without drafts at floor level, where they actually sleep. A duck coop is a different design problem, which is why we build them differently.

How many ducks can I keep, and how much space do they need?

Plan on at least 4 to 6 square feet of house space and 10 to 15 square feet of run space per duck — more than a chicken, because ducks live entirely at ground level and are messier with water. Local rules on flock size vary by city and HOA; we check yours during design. Most backyard keepers are happiest starting with three to five ducks.

Do ducks need a pond?

No — but they need water deep enough to dunk their heads, and they're far happier with water they can splash in. A properly drained splash-pool zone works well in most yards. If you do want a small pond or want the enclosure built around an existing pool or water feature, we design the coop, drainage and predator-proofing around it.

What predators are a danger to backyard ducks?

Nearly all of them, because ducks sleep on the ground: raccoons, foxes and coyotes at night, hawks and owls from above, and rats and snakes after eggs. A safe duck enclosure has galvanized steel mesh (never chicken wire), a dig barrier buried or skirted at the base, a fully covered run, and a securely latched night house the flock is locked into after dusk.

How do duck coops handle Arizona heat and East Coast winters?

Ducks are hardier than chickens in cold, but water management is the year-round challenge. In Arizona we design for deep shade, splash-water access, and drainage that dries fast between refills. In Maryland, Pennsylvania and North Carolina winters, the enemy is frozen slop and mud: sloped, well-drained bases, dry bedding zones and draft-free-but-ventilated houses keep the flock healthy through the season.
